Pandit Bickram Ghosh
Grammy Winner. Tabla Maestro. Rhythm Visionary.
There are percussionists, and then there are artists who redefine what percussion can mean for a generation. Pandit Bickram Ghosh belongs firmly in the second category.
Born into a musical household that could hardly have been more distinguished, his father is the revered Pt. Shankar Ghosh. Bickram Ghosh grew up not just learning the tabla but inhabiting it. The instrument became, over decades of rigorous practice and fearless experimentation, an extension of his own voice.
His international breakthrough came through an unlikely but inevitable pairing: a creative partnership with Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sitar maestro who had done more than anyone to bring Indian classical music to the world stage. Together, they won a Grammy Award, giving Pt. Bickram Ghosh a place in a tiny, rarefied group of Indian classical musicians who have received the music industry's highest honour. But he was not done. His work on the score for the film Jal earned him an Oscar nomination, recognition of a musical sensibility that transcended genre boundaries with quiet confidence.
What sets Pt. Bickram Ghosh apart from many artists of his stature is a genuine hunger for collaboration and innovation. His neo-fusion band Rhythmscape became one of the defining musical projects of its era in India, an ensemble that brought together classical depth and contemporary adventurousness to create something audiences had simply never heard before. Rhythmscape's Kolkata concerts, in particular, became legendary events, drawing musicians from across the world. Among those who performed with Rhythmscape was the American world-percussionist Greg Ellis, whose connection to Kolkata runs directly through Bickram Ghosh.
For Gappu Percussions, Pt. Bickram Ghosh's endorsement carries a meaning that goes beyond mere brand association. Gappu was founded in Kolkata: the same city where Bickram Ghosh built his reputation, hosted international musicians, and helped create a percussion culture of genuine global ambition. When one of the most prominent percussionists in that tradition lent his name and support to a young Indian percussion brand, it validated something important: that Gappu was not merely a manufacturer, but a participant in the larger story of Indian rhythm. His early support helped establish Gappu's credibility among the professional music community in a way that no advertising could have replicated.
Today, Pt. Bickram Ghosh continues to perform, teach, and collaborate across traditions and continents. His name on the Gappu artist roster is a reminder of where the brand comes from, and of the standard it holds itself to.
