GREG ELLIS

Greg Ellis

Hollywood Composer. Master Drummer. East Meets West.

Greg Ellis is the kind of musician who makes the word 'world percussion' feel accurate rather than promotional. Based in Los Angeles, he is a master drummer and composer whose career has taken him from the concert halls of Kolkata to the scoring stages of Hollywood blockbusters. And whose collaborators span a range that is, honestly, difficult to comprehend until you see it laid out.

His film work alone establishes him as one of the most in-demand percussionists in American cinema. The Matrix Reloaded. 300. Argo. Transformers. Each of these is a film where the percussion score plays a specific, load-bearing role; where the drums are not background texture but a core element of the emotional and dramatic architecture. Ellis has done that work at that level, repeatedly, across genres and tonal registers that demand very different things from a percussionist.

Beyond cinema, the breadth of his musical collaborations is striking. He has worked with Zakir Hussain, arguably the most recognised tabla player in the world, and one of the great musical diplomats between Indian and Western traditions. He has worked with Mickey Hart, the Grateful Dead drummer who became one of the world's foremost advocates for global percussion culture and ethnomusicology. He has worked with Billy Idol. He has, in other words, moved between the deep traditions of Indian classical music and the very different energy of Western rock and pop with complete fluency.

His connection to Gappu is personal and geographic. He is a longtime friend and collaborator of Pt. Bickram Ghosh, the tabla maestro who is among Gappu's most distinguished endorsers. When Greg Ellis performed with Rhythmscape in Kolkata, Bickram Ghosh's neo-fusion ensemble and he came to the city that gave birth to Gappu. Those dates are part of the fabric of the Kolkata music scene from which the brand emerged.

For Gappu Percussions, Greg Ellis represents a very specific and valuable thing: proof that the brand's values -- rhythm as a universal language, the conversation between East and West, the belief that percussion is one of the great connective forces in human culture, are not aspirational marketing language. They are the actual convictions of the artists who have chosen to associate themselves with this brand. Greg Ellis has lived that philosophy for decades. His presence in the Gappu family is its fullest expression.
