Aritrika Maiti
Drummer. Percussionist. Seven Years of Stage, Screen, and Everything in Between.
Aritrika Maiti does not take the narrow path. Based in Haldia, West Bengal, she plays drums, tabla, cajon, djembe, bongo, darbuka, and Punjabi dhol, an instrument list that maps the full arc of Indian and global hand percussion. Her motivation is her insatiable curiosity about what rhythm can sound like across different forms. Seven years of drumming, two years of tabla under the tutelage of the renowned Pt. Subhen Chatterjee, the Grammy-nominated maestro, and a growing command of every percussion instrument she has turned her hands to. The trajectory has been consistent, and the results are visible.
Her drum teachers, Anshu Kumar Jha and Himadri Sekhar Das, gave her the technical foundation that professional performance demands. But Aritrika's career has not stayed in practice rooms. She has performed at live music shows, cultural events, and festivals across West Bengal and Delhi, building the stage experience that no amount of practice at home can replicate. Her genres span Bollywood, Bengali folk, fusion, Indian classical, and rock. The same range that appears in her playing, where classical training sits alongside the physical directness of rock drumming without either seeming out of place.
The television record is substantial and growing. She appeared as a guest female drummer on Aakash 8's Good Morning Aakash and performed on Zee Bangla's Dadagiri Season 10. She spent six months as a musician on Zee Bangla's Sonar Jalsaghar, the music reality show that gave her extended, recurring exposure to a Bengali television audience of considerable scale. Most recently, she was invited as a guest female drummer on Zee Bangla Saregamapa 2025, appearing in the same prestigious slot that also featured fellow Gappu artist Manisha Biswas. Her film credit, Hami 2 (Windos Production), adds a screen dimension to what is already a wide-ranging portfolio. That accumulation of television, film, live performance across two states, speaks to a working musician who has built her career methodically and without waiting for permission.
Gappu co-founder Pallab Ghosh reached out to Aritrika directly through social media, and she has been a Gappu Army Artist and Official Endorsee for close to two years, using the B02 Cajon, TILT Cajon, Jambox, and Taal Octa Snare. She creates percussion content regularly across Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Her description of Gappu's appeal is identical in spirit, if not in word, to that of many working percussionists who have spent time on the instruments: affordable, portable, and possessing a raw tonal quality that holds up in any setting from a casual session to a professional stage.
Aritrika Maiti is building something, and she is doing it with the kind of focused, unglamorous accumulation of work that eventually becomes a career that others look at and wonder how it happened so fast.
